How to Make Rumi’s Sword (Kpop Demon Hunters Cardboard Tutorial)

The K-Pop Demon Hunters craze got me curious about the movie. I loved the music, the animation, and the characters, but what really grabbed me were the weapons. Rumi, Mira, and Zoey each have weapons that feel regal and mythic but also futuristic and stylish. They’re cute and flashy but still super powerful for cutting down demons.

That inspired me to try building them out of cardboard for cosplay. I’d never made a sword before (or any kind of melee weapon), so I wanted to challenge myself. I started with Rumi’s 4 Tigers Sword, and I’m hyped with how it came out. Here’s the step-by-step DIY process I followed …

How To Make Rumi’s Sword (DIY Cardboard Tutorial)

I cut a squared-off strip of thick cardboard, bent the corrugation a little to soften it, then rolled it up tight into a chunky handle. That gave it the solid feel I wanted without being flimsy.

Stacking the Guard

I sketched out the guard design inspired by Rumi’s sword, cut multiple layers of cardboard, and stacked them up with hot glue. This gave the guard both thickness and durability while keeping the design sharp.

Building the Blade

For strength, I glued a wooden dowel down the center like a spine. Then I cut matching cardboard blade shapes, glued them onto both sides of the dowel, and pressed them flat so the blade stayed nice and straight.

Making the Pommel

On the bottom of the handle, I stacked smaller cardboard shapes to recreate the Huntrix logo-style pommel.

 Painting the Sword

Next came the fun part — paint. I covered the sword in metallic gold paint to match Rumi’s signature weapon and give it that shiny, Huntrix finish.

Adding the Vinyl Wrap

To mimic the glowing, color-shifting look of the blades in K-Pop Demon Hunters, I wrapped the blade and parts of the guard/handle in adhesive vinyl. The vinyl gave it a slick, professional finish that paint alone couldn’t achieve.

Sealing the Build

Finally, I added a gloss clear coat to protect the edges and make the sword pop under the light. This step is optional, but it definitely makes the build feel more complete.
